6 String Freedom

Part 4: Build and use one major scale · Lesson 031 / 117

Give the scale notes numbers

Today’s one thing

Use scale degrees while keeping C as the reference.

A scale degree tells you a note's place in the scale. In C major, C is 1, D is 2, E is 3, F is 4, G is 5, A is 6 and B is 7. The next C repeats degree 1 an octave higher.

The tonic is the scale or key's home reference. For C major, it is C. For today's scale practice, keep that reference fixed while naming other degrees.

A number is useful because it describes a relationship that can be transferred. Degree 3 in C major is E; degree 3 in another major key will have a different note name but the same major-third relationship to its tonic.

Do not mix degree numbers with fret numbers. E may be degree 3 while sitting at fret 5 on the B string. One number describes its musical relationship; the other describes its guitar address.

A concrete example

In C major, B-string fret 5 is E, degree 3. High E fret 5 is A, degree 6. Both use fret 5 but have different names and degrees.

Use this as a note map, not a speed test. Once the relationships make sense, play them without looking.

Try it, slowly

  1. Play C major and say the note names.
  2. Repeat and say degrees 1 through 7, then 1.
  3. Find degrees 3, 5 and 1 in a different order without running the whole scale first.

Check one idea

Is fret 3 automatically degree 3?

Show the explanation

No. Scale degree depends on the musical reference and note name. Fret number is only a location on a chosen string.

A good place to stop

You can answer “which degree?” separately from “which fret?” in C major.

Return to the example after a short break. A clear explanation matters more than speed.
